by Phil Campbell, In October 2007, legendary performer Charlie Nothing passed away at his Soquel California home. The following article was originally published in The Fretboard Journal, Number 6, Summer 2007. Charlie was pleased with the story, saying "I've had interviews and articles before but yours is the best by farÅ  Thank you so much!" Thank you Charlie Nothing! We miss you.

Once again, the oldest tale in the English language is told in the newly released CD "Beowulf". This time in a style familiar to the modern ear, and highly entertaining. The musical tale is based on the book "Beowulf The Warrior", (Bethlehem Books) by the English author, and master wordsmith Ian Serraillier, with music by Sam Sorensen.

The first thing that leaps out you is the voice. Imagine, if you can, Lou Rawls fronting Tower of Power, and you'll have an idea of where the music offered up here is coming from. And it's a mighty fine place to be, especially on the self penned material which just pulses with late night grooves.

A woman's soulful voice; doin' it like Tina Turner said back in the day when she and Ike took the gentle, country, rock song "Proud Mary" and dowsed it with grease and lit it on fire: nice and easy then nice and rough. Yeah, we've been hearing this sound from Chaka Khan, representing the funky soul side of the sound to Norman Connors and vocalist Jean Carn playing their unique brand of multi-cultural, freedom jazz.
